Maybe one of the best things I have ever done is create a homework timetable for my classes at the beginning of each year. Not only does it allow the pupils to know when they can expect homework but it also allows you to effectively plan your marking so you can balance your workload. Setting homework ad hoc can cause you a nightmare, this will help you avoid this. I have a copy literally stuck to my desk in my teaching room.
